The Miami River

Welcome to Miami, my hometown.

Let’s start with the Miami River, the oldest natural landmark in Southeast Florida.

The city of Miami takes its name from the Miami River, which in turn derives its name from Lake Mayaimi, now known as Lake Okeechobee.

The tribe word “Mayaimi” is believed to mean “big water.”

The river has gone from a crystal clear wild river to gritty urban sprawl.
