Coconut Grove Playhouse

Coconut Grove Playhouse: A Historic Landmark

This is The Coconut Grove Playhouse. Originally constructed as a movie theater called the Player's State Theater, it opened in 1927, as part of the Paramount chain. Known for its Spanish Rococo design and innovative features like air conditioning and the largest Wurlitzer organ in the United States.

In 1956, it was converted into a live theater, reopening with Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Over the next 50 years, it hosted iconic stars such as Maureen Stapleton, Liza Minnelli, and Carol Channing, becoming a cultural hub.

Despite its prominence, financial struggles led to its closure in 2006. Restoration plans include preserving its historic facade and constructing a modern 300-seat theater, with $21.6 million allocated for the project.
